Westfield is a thriving community with many local clubs and groups using various recreational and leisure facilities.
Westfield Community Groups 2000
The Rose Bowl Award is made each year at our Parish Assembly in April or May, to a volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the community.
We have two good standard halls, a parish field used predominantly for football and stool ball, a cricket ground, Scout HQ, recreational ground, bowling-green, tennis courts and several play areas. There are well established activities for all ages and these include fitness classes, mother & toddler and playgroup, horticultural society, WI, dance classes, drama and art groups, church choir, table tennis, bowls, football, tennis and cricket, Cubs, Scouts, Guides and Brownies and many more. This section of our community website will help you to find out what there is to do in our parish, when and where events and services can be found, and what public transport, libraries, and health services are available. See the table below for contact telephone numbers, or click on the left hand link for full details.
Please contact the website here if you would like to amend an existing entry or add a new one to the Community pages.

Encouraged and supported by the Parish Council, a group of volunteers produced an extensive questionnaire to establish local priorities. This was delivered to every household in the parish. The results were analysed and an Action Plan was formulated to tackle those issues high-lighted in the survey as being important to the residents of Westfield. The plan was published in 2006 and has been up-dated each year since as targets are achieved and new goals identified.

Beavers are aged between 6 and 8, they meet on Tuesdays during term time.
In the Summer months the Beavers spend a lot of time outside, they go on hikes, have treasure hunts, explore nature, play games and much more. When it is dark outside the Beavers can be found in the Scout hut making things, doing cooking, painting, learning about things like first aid and safety and playing games.
They join in lots of activities organised by the Scout District or County which include things like crazy golf tournaments and activity days at Broadstone Warren Scout camp site. The picture shows them joining the rest of the Scout Group for Remembrance day.

Cubs meets on a Monday evening at the Scout Hut in Westfield. We do a wide range of activities both indoors and outdoors, some favourite activities are cooking, over an open fire or inside, craft activities, hikes, games and our annual Christmas Pantomime. We take part in lots of District activities and have recently done very well, winning the last Football Tournament and Interpack Challenge, and coming second in the Swimming Gala.
We go camping at least twice a year, sometimes more, and have opportunities for activities such as archery, canoeing, climbing, driving go-karts, as well as wide games and camp fires.

Fire Safety Poster Competition Panto 2009
Our Annual Christmas Panto this year was Dick Whittington which played for one night only at the Parish Hall. We put the panto on after very little rehearsal and it is a triubute to the Cubs that it always goes pretty well! Many thanks are due to all the parents who produce fantastic costumes which really make the show look good.
This year the evening was attended by the District Commisioner and her assistant who presented some awards, including a five year service award to Julie (Baloo). The evening ended with refreshments, raffles and carol singing.

In September last year Westfield Cubs made three Fire Safety Posters to enter into the Chubb Calendar competition. Chubb were looking for 12 pictures for their 2009 calendar with suitable Fire Safety messages for each month. This was a group entry so all Cubs contributed, drawing pictures of fire engines, fire men, blazing houses or colouring in letters to write a message. One of our pictures with contributions from at least six Cubs was chosen and published in the calendar. We won £100 towards an outdoor activity for the whole pack and will be using it on a day out to Knockhatch Adventure Park in April.

Westfield came out on top in the District Football tournament in 2009, winning in a decinding penalty shoot-out in the final. It was nervous time for parents and leaders on the touch line, but Harley in goal made some good saves and all our shots were on target!

We entered two teams into the District Interpack Challenge, and were competing against teams from several other packs. It was a really fun packed day as each team completed a number of challenges throughout the day. They had to do lots of scouting skills such as tent pitching, fire lighting, knots, pioneering, shelter building and tracking. They had their brains tested with a puzzle and their senses tested with a variety of food to identify blindfold. They were busy all day and then there was a final long wait for the scores to be added up. Our teams both came out top! The picture shows the winning team on the knotting challenge.
Five Cubs and two leaders had a great time at summer camp at Thriftwood Scout Camp Site in Essex in August 2009.

We did loads of different activities in the five days that we were there. We had a one day expedition finding our way with a map and compass to a local country park. We did climbing and abseiling, archery and caonoeing, pedalled go-karts and explored a cave maze.

All the Cubs helped with the camp duties, collecting water, cooking and washing up. The Cubs also made boats from natural materials to sail on the lake, took part in a site wide game with all the other campers on the site, mostly Scouts and Guides, and played games on our own camp site.
The local group camp was held in Forge field Westfield during the May half term. Cubs and Scouts worked together in mixed patrols on Scouting skills, an incident hike, air rifle shooting, shelter building and games.

Cubs use knots and lashings to build washing up stands for their patrols to use. These structures were well used for the whole weekend, and managed to stay up!

Scouts are aged between 101/2 and 14 years old. The Westfield Scout Troop meets on a Thursday evening in the Scout Hut. The picture above shows a visit to the Coastguard where we learnt about the work of the Coastguard and helped with a demonstration of a cliff rescue.
Scout Show for Comic Relief Painting the Hut

The Scout Troop decided to raise some money for Comic Relief by putting on a mini scout show. We sang the red nose day song to begin the show and then had a series of sketches, songs and camp fire skits, rounding off with Always look on the Bright Side of Life.

If I were not upon this stage...

At a troop forum in September the Scouts decided that they would like to "paint the hut". They wanted to brighten up the main hall and add some colour. They wrote letters to local suppliers and were delighted when Trade Paints replied to say that they would be willing to help with supplying paint and equipment.

All the Scouts took part in all aspects of the work. So they spent some time preparing the walls, washing down emulsion and rubbing down gloss. They all helped painting the top part of the walls and ceiling white with rollers and brushes and then the bottom part green gloss.

Then they painted some of the Scout logos on to the walls, first marking out the designs and then painting them. This all took several evenings.

We decided to link this to the DIY badge, so another week was spent doing some of the other things for the badge such as unblocking sinks, maintaining toilets, changing light bulbs and electric plugs, as well as discussing safety equipment and product labelling.
The finished results! Many thanks to Trade Paints for their support.
